What Is a VAT and GST Calculator?
VAT (value added tax) and GST (goods and services tax) are consumption taxes that are added to the price of goods and services. The seller collects the tax from the customer and pays it to the government. Most countries use one of these two names, but the idea is the same: a percentage of the price is added on top.
A VAT and GST calculator does two jobs. It can add tax to a price that does not include it, and it can remove tax from a total that already includes it. The second job is the one people usually get wrong by hand, because the tax is a share of the price before tax, not a share of the final total.
This calculator has the standard rates for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, India, Bangladesh, the UK, Pakistan, Germany, France, Canada, Australia, Singapore and more. You can also type any rate you like.
How to Use This VAT and GST Calculator
- Choose the job. Use the Add tab when you have a price without tax. Use the Remove tab when you have a total that already includes tax.
- Select your country. The tax name, the currency and the standard rate are filled in for you.
- Pick the rate type. For example, in India you can choose 5%, 18% or 40%. You can also edit the rate box by hand.
- Enter the price and press Calculate.
- Read the result. You see the price before tax, the tax amount and the price including tax. For India you also see the CGST and SGST split or the IGST amount.

How VAT and GST Are Calculated
There are only two formulas to remember. Let the rate be R percent.
- Adding tax: tax = price before tax x R / 100. Price including tax = price before tax + tax.
- Removing tax: price before tax = price including tax / (1 + R / 100). Tax = price including tax – price before tax.
A very common mistake is to take 15% off a total that includes 15% tax. That gives the wrong answer, because 15% of the total is more than 15% of the original price. Always divide by 1.15 instead.
In India, when a sale happens inside one state the GST is split equally into CGST and SGST. When goods or services move between states, the full amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same in both cases.
VAT and GST Examples
| Country | Case | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| UAE | Add 5% VAT to AED 1,000 | 1,000 x 5 / 100 = 50 | VAT AED 50, total AED 1,050 |
| Saudi Arabia | Remove 15% VAT from SAR 1,150 | 1,150 / 1.15 = 1,000 | Price SAR 1,000, VAT SAR 150 |
| India | Add 18% GST to 10,000 | 10,000 x 18 / 100 = 1,800 | GST 1,800 (CGST 900 + SGST 900), total 11,800 |
| Bangladesh | Remove 15% VAT from 11,500 | 11,500 / 1.15 = 10,000 | Price 10,000, VAT 1,500 |
| United Kingdom | Add 20% VAT to 200 | 200 x 20 / 100 = 40 | VAT 40, total 240 |
Common VAT and GST Mistakes
Subtracting the rate from the total. To remove 5% VAT from 1,050 you divide by 1.05 and get 1,000. Taking 5% off 1,050 gives 997.50, which is wrong.
Using the wrong rate. Many countries have more than one rate. Food, books, medicine or exports can be reduced, zero-rated or exempt. Check the rate printed on your invoice.
Mixing up zero-rated and exempt. Both have no tax charged to the customer, but a zero-rated seller can usually claim back the tax paid on costs and an exempt seller cannot.
Forgetting local taxes. In Canada the federal GST is only part of the sales tax in many provinces. In the US there is no national VAT, and sales tax depends on the state and the city.
Rounding too early. Round only the final amounts. If you round every line, the invoice total can be a few cents different.
Tips for Using VAT and GST Correctly
Keep tax invoices. Businesses that are registered can usually claim back the tax they pay on purchases, but only with a valid invoice. Show prices before tax on quotes to business customers and prices including tax for consumers if your law requires it. If you sell across borders, check the rules for the place of supply, because the rate of the buyer country may apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between VAT and GST?
They work in almost the same way. Both are taxes on the value added at each step of production and sale, and the final customer bears the cost. VAT is the name used in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Bangladesh and most of Europe. GST is used in India, Australia, Canada, Singapore and New Zealand.
How do I calculate VAT on a price?
Multiply the price before tax by the rate and divide by 100. For example, 5% VAT on 1,000 is 50. Add it to the price to get 1,050. Use the Add tab of this calculator to do it automatically.
How do I remove VAT from a total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 15% VAT you divide by 1.15. A total of 1,150 gives a price of 1,000 and VAT of 150. Use the Remove tab to see the result and a table for other rates.
What is the VAT rate in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh?
The UAE charges 5% VAT, Saudi Arabia charges 15% and Bangladesh charges a standard 15%. Some goods and services have special treatment, such as zero rating for exports, so check your invoice.
What are the GST rates in India?
India now uses GST slabs of 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%, with 3% on gold. The old 12% and 28% slabs were removed from 22 September 2025. Most goods and services fall in the 5% or 18% slab, and luxury and sin goods are charged 40%.
What are CGST, SGST and IGST?
CGST is the central part of GST and SGST is the state part. When a sale is inside one state, the GST is split equally into the two. When a sale is between two states, the whole amount is charged as IGST. The total tax is the same.
Is this VAT calculator accurate?
The calculation is exact for the rate you choose. The only thing that can differ is the rate itself, because it depends on the type of goods or services and on changes in the law. You can edit the rate box at any time.
