YouTube Watch Time Calculator
Turn your views and average view duration into watch hours, and find out how long it will take to reach the YouTube monetization targets of 3,000, 4,000 or 8,000 hours.
Fill in the numbers on the left, then press Calculate.
What Is a YouTube Watch Time Calculator?
Watch time is the total amount of time that people spend watching your videos. YouTube measures it in hours, and it is one of the main numbers that decide whether your channel can join the YouTube Partner Program and earn from ads. It is also a strong signal for the recommendation system, because videos that keep people watching are shown to more viewers.
This calculator does two jobs. The first tab turns your views and average view duration into total watch hours, and shows how many views you need to reach the monetization goals. The second tab takes your current watch hours and subscribers, adds your monthly growth, and estimates how many months you need to qualify.
How to Use This YouTube Watch Time Calculator
- Watch time from views. Enter the number of views and your average view duration in minutes and seconds. You can find the duration in YouTube Studio under Analytics. If you only know the video length and the average percentage viewed, enter those two numbers instead.
- Read the result. You see the total hours, the hours you earn from every 1,000 views and how many views you need for 3,000, 4,000 and 8,000 hours.
- Hours to monetization. Switch to the second tab, enter your watch hours from the last 12 months and your subscribers, choose a target and add your monthly growth.
- Plan. The calculator shows what is left and the month when you can expect to qualify at the same pace.
YouTube Monetization Requirements
The table shows the YouTube Partner Program entry levels as of October 2026. YouTube announced that the ad revenue level will double for new applicants from 1 February 2027, so check YouTube Studio for the latest rules.
| Level | Subscribers | Watch time or Shorts views | What you unlock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early access | 500 and 3 public uploads in 90 days | 3,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 3 million Shorts views in 90 days | Fan funding such as memberships and Super Chat, and shopping |
| Full monetization (until 31 January 2027) | 1,000 | 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue and Premium revenue share |
| Full monetization (new applicants from 1 February 2027) | 1,000 | 8,000 qualified watch hours in 12 months, or 20 million Shorts views in 90 days | Ad revenue and Premium revenue share |
Only public long-form video counts toward the watch hour goals. Watch time on Shorts, private or unlisted videos, deleted videos and ad campaigns does not count. Shorts have their own separate path that is based on views.
How Watch Time Is Calculated
The formula is simple:
- Watch hours = views x average view duration in seconds / 3,600
- Average view duration = video length x average percentage viewed / 100
- Views needed = target hours x 3,600 / average view duration in seconds
This means two things grow your watch time: more views, and a longer average view duration. Doubling the time that people stay on your video has the same effect as doubling your views.
Watch Time Examples
| Case | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 10,000 views, average view duration 4:30 | 10,000 x 270 seconds / 3,600 | 750 watch hours |
| 10 minute video, 45% viewed, 10,000 views | 4.5 minutes = 270 seconds, then the same as above | 750 watch hours |
| Views needed for 4,000 hours at 2 minutes | 4,000 x 3,600 / 120 | 120,000 views |
| Views needed for 4,000 hours at 5 minutes | 4,000 x 3,600 / 300 | 48,000 views |
| Views needed for 4,000 hours at 10 minutes | 4,000 x 3,600 / 600 | 24,000 views |
| 1,800 hours and 400 subscribers, growing 250 hours and 60 subscribers a month, target 4,000 hours and 1,000 subscribers | 2,200 hours left / 250 = 9 months, 600 subscribers left / 60 = 10 months | About 10 months |
Common Watch Time Mistakes
Counting Shorts watch time. Hours from Shorts do not count toward the 4,000 or 8,000 hour goal. Shorts need their own views goal.
Counting private or unlisted videos. Only public videos count, so a video that you set to private or delete takes its hours away.
Forgetting the 12 month window. Watch hours are counted over the last 365 days. Hours that are older than a year drop out, so slow growth can keep you at the same level.
Looking only at views. A video with 20,000 views and a 30 second average view duration gives fewer hours than a video with 5,000 views and a 6 minute average view duration.
Ignoring the subscriber goal. You need both the hours and the subscribers. A channel with enough hours but too few subscribers cannot join.
Tips to Increase Your Watch Time
Hook your viewers in the first 15 seconds and tell them what they will get. Cut slow parts and keep a steady pace. Use chapters and a clear structure, so viewers can follow the story. Make playlists and end screens that lead to your next video, because a viewer who watches a second video adds to your total. Check the audience retention graph in YouTube Studio to see where people leave, and fix that part in your next video. Longer videos help only if people really keep watching them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many watch hours do I need to get monetized on YouTube?
For ad revenue you need 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 public watch hours in the last 12 months, or 10 million public Shorts views in the last 90 days. From 1 February 2027 new applicants need 8,000 hours or 20 million Shorts views. For fan funding you need 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days and 3,000 hours or 3 million Shorts views.
How do I calculate YouTube watch time?
Multiply your number of views by the average view duration in seconds and divide by 3,600. For example, 10,000 views with an average of 4 minutes and 30 seconds gives 750 hours.
How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?
It depends on how long people watch. At an average view duration of 5 minutes you need about 48,000 views. At 2 minutes you need 120,000 views, and at 10 minutes you need 24,000 views. Use the first tab to see the number for your own average.
Where can I find my watch time and average view duration?
Open YouTube Studio, go to Analytics and choose the Reach or Engagement tab. You will see the watch time in hours and the average view duration. The Earn tab also shows your progress toward the Partner Program goals.
Do YouTube Shorts count toward the 4,000 watch hours?
No. Shorts do not count toward the watch hour goal. They have a separate path based on public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Does watch time expire?
Yes. YouTube counts the watch hours of the last 365 days, so hours that are older than a year no longer count. Keep uploading and growing so that new hours replace the old ones.
How accurate is the monetization estimate?
The estimate assumes that your monthly watch hours and subscribers stay the same. Real growth changes from month to month, and the rules can change, so use the result as a plan and check YouTube Studio for your exact progress.
