Zakat Calculator
Work out the zakat on your gold, silver, cash, investments and business stock. You enter the gold and silver price, so the result uses the price of your zakat day.
Fill in the form on the left, then press Calculate zakat.
What Is Zakat?
Zakat is the third pillar of Islam. It is a yearly payment of 2.5% on the wealth that you hold above a minimum level called the nisab, after that wealth has stayed with you for one full lunar year (the hawl). It is given to people in need and to the other groups named in the Quran.
This zakat calculator adds your gold, silver, cash, investments, business stock and money that others owe you. It subtracts the debts that you must pay now and checks the result against the nisab. You type the gold and silver prices yourself, so the result always uses the price of the day that you choose.
How to Use This Zakat Calculator
- Pick a currency and a weight unit. The unit (gram, tola or troy ounce) is used for the prices and for the amounts of gold and silver that you own.
- Enter today’s gold and silver prices. Take them from a source you trust. Both prices are per unit of the weight you selected.
- Add what you own. Enter your gold and silver weight, cash, investments, business stock and money owed to you.
- Enter your debts. Add only the debts that are due now, such as loan instalments and unpaid bills.
- Choose the nisab and press Calculate. Silver gives a lower threshold and gold gives a higher one.
Nisab and Zakat Rate

What Counts as Zakatable Wealth
Zakat is usually due on:
- Cash at home and money in bank accounts.
- Gold and silver, in any form, depending on your school of thought for jewellery.
- Shares, funds and other investments held to sell for profit.
- Goods held for trade, valued at the current market price.
- Money that others owe you and that you expect to get back.
Zakat is usually not due on the home you live in, a car for personal use, clothes, furniture and other items for personal use.
Zakat Calculation Examples
The prices below are only for illustration. Use the real price of the day.
| Case | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Cash 10,000, 50 g gold at 95 per gram, debts 2,000, gold nisab | Total 14,750, net 12,750, nisab 87.48 x 95 = 8,310.60 | Zakat 318.75 |
| Cash 3,000, 20 g gold at 95 per gram, no debts, gold nisab | Total 4,900, nisab 8,310.60 | Below nisab, no zakat |
Common Zakat Mistakes
Using an old gold price. Use the price on your zakat date, not the price when you bought the gold.
Forgetting money owed to you. Debts that you are sure to get back count as part of your wealth.
Subtracting all your debts. Subtract only what is due now, not a whole long term loan.
Paying before the year is complete. The hawl must pass over your wealth, so keep a fixed zakat date each year.
Who Can Receive Zakat
The Quran (9:60) names eight groups: the poor, the needy, those who collect zakat, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, those freeing people from bondage, those in debt, those striving in the cause of Allah and travellers in need. You cannot give your zakat to your own parents, grandparents, children or spouse.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the nisab for zakat?
The nisab is 87.48 grams of gold (7.5 tola) or 612.36 grams of silver (52.5 tola). If your net wealth stays above it for a full lunar year, zakat of 2.5% is due.
Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?
Many scholars advise the silver nisab because it is lower, so more people pay zakat and more poor people benefit. Others use the gold nisab. Follow the view of the scholar or school that you trust.
Do I pay zakat on my house and car?
No. A home that you live in, a car for personal use, clothes and household items are not zakatable. A property that you hold for trade is treated differently, so ask a scholar.
Do I pay zakat on gold jewellery?
Scholars differ. Many say that jewellery for wear is exempt, and others say zakat is due once it reaches the nisab. The calculator counts all the gold that you enter, so enter only what applies under your view.
Can I subtract my debts?
Yes. The calculator subtracts the debts that are due now. For long term debts such as a mortgage, many scholars count only the instalments due in the coming year.
When should I pay zakat?
Pay on your zakat date, which is the day your wealth first reached the nisab, or on a fixed date such as in Ramadan. Use the same date every year and the prices of that day.
