Free Online PDF Compressor and Optimizer

Large PDF files are a daily annoyance. A scanned contract will not fit through an email attachment limit, a portfolio takes forever to load on a phone, and a government portal rejects your upload because the file is a few hundred kilobytes too big. This free online PDF compressor and optimizer solves all of those problems on a single page, so you never need to hunt for a different website for each job.

Pick a tab, add your file and download a smaller PDF in seconds. Unlike many online PDF services, this tool does not upload your document anywhere. All the work happens inside your own browser, which means contracts, invoices, certificates, bank statements and personal records never leave your device. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit.

What You Can Do With This PDF Tool

Compress PDF

The fastest way to make a PDF smaller. Choose Light for a lossless cleanup that keeps text selectable, Recommended for the best balance of size and quality, Strong for noticeably smaller files, or Extreme when the smallest possible size matters more than image sharpness.

Reduce PDF File Size

Want to decide the trade-off yourself? Move the image quality and resolution sliders, optionally switch to grayscale, and compare the original size with the new size before you download. It is ideal when you already know the DPI your document needs.

Optimize PDF for Web

PDFs that are published on websites, blogs, online courses or customer portals should be light. This preset resamples pages for screen viewing so the file downloads quickly, even on a slow mobile connection. Choose Balanced for sharp reading or Fastest loading for the smallest result.

Optimize PDF for Email

Select your email attachment limit, such as 2, 5, 10, 20 or 25 MB, and the tool shrinks the PDF to fit with a safety margin. Because email attachments grow when they are encoded, the tool aims for about 90 percent of the limit you choose, so your message goes through the first time.

Compress PDF to a Target Size

Application portals often demand something like “PDF under 200 KB”. Enter the exact size in KB or MB and the tool tests several quality levels, then keeps the sharpest version that fits. If the target is unrealistic for the document, you get the smallest version it could make and a clear message instead of a broken file.

How to Compress a PDF Online

Follow these steps for any of the five tools:

  1. Open the tab you need above the tool: Compress PDF, Reduce File Size, Optimize for Web, Optimize for Email or Compress to Target Size.
  2. Click the upload area or drag your PDF into it. The file name, size and page count appear right away.
  3. Choose your options, such as the compression level, the quality slider, the email limit or the target size.
  4. Click the main button and wait while the progress bar runs. Large documents take longer because every page is processed on your device.
  5. Check the before and after sizes, then press the green Download compressed PDF button.

Which Compression Level Should You Choose?

Not sure which setting to pick? Use this quick guide.

  • Light. Lossless cleanup that keeps text, fonts and quality unchanged. Best for text-heavy documents that must stay searchable, though savings are usually small.
  • Recommended. Pages are resampled to about 150 DPI at good quality. The right choice for reports, brochures, scanned forms and presentations.
  • Strong. About 110 DPI. Great for reading on screen, sharing in chat apps and uploading to portals.
  • Extreme. About 72 DPI at lower quality. Use it when you only need a readable copy at the smallest size.

As a rule of thumb, 72 to 110 DPI suits screens, 150 DPI suits everyday printing and 300 DPI is only needed for professional print jobs.

How PDF Compression Works, and What to Expect

Most online PDF compressors work in one of two ways. A lossless cleanup rewrites the internal structure of the file without touching its content, which is safe but usually saves only a little. Image-based compression re-saves each page as an optimized picture, which can reduce file size dramatically, especially for scans and image-heavy documents.

The Light level uses the first method. Every other level and tool uses the second one. That is why the results are so much smaller, and it also means the text in the new PDF may not be selectable or searchable. If you need to copy text, fill forms or search the document, keep your original file or choose the Light level. Your original file is never changed.

Why Are PDF Files So Large?

Understanding why a PDF is large makes it easier to shrink. The usual causes are:

  • High-resolution scans. A scanner set to 600 DPI creates enormous page images that no screen needs.
  • Uncompressed or photographic images. Photos pasted into slides and reports are often several megabytes each.
  • Embedded fonts. Full font files add weight, particularly with several typefaces or complex scripts.
  • Exports with default settings. Many design and office programs choose maximum quality when saving to PDF.
  • Merged documents. Combining many files can repeat the same resources again and again.

Why Use Our PDF Compressor?

  • Free and simple. No registration, no watermark and no hidden limits.
  • Private. Your PDF is processed in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.
  • Five tools in one page. Switch from compressing to targeting an exact size without starting over.
  • See the result before you download. Original size, new size and percentage saved are shown every time.
  • Honest results. If a file cannot get smaller, the tool tells you instead of handing back a bigger file.
  • Works everywhere. Use it on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS in any modern browser.

Common Ways People Use It

  • Send a signed contract or scanned invoice by email without hitting the attachment limit.
  • Upload documents to a visa, university, job or tax portal that sets a strict maximum size.
  • Publish a brochure, menu, catalogue or e-book on your website so visitors can open it quickly.
  • Share a lecture handout or assignment in a messaging app with limited upload size.
  • Free up storage by shrinking an archive of old scanned documents.

Tips for the Best Results

  • Keep the original. Compression is a one-way trip, so save the compressed file under a new name.
  • Start with Recommended. Only move to Strong or Extreme if the result is still too large.
  • For scans, try grayscale in the Reduce File Size tab. Black and white documents shrink a lot.
  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first because the tool cannot read encrypted files.
  • Very large PDFs are processed on your device, so a desktop or laptop works best for files over 50 MB.
  • If a target size cannot be reached, split the document first with our PDF Merge & Split Tool and compress each part.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Every tool on this page is 100% free. There is no registration, no watermark and no daily limit.

No. Compression runs inside your browser, so your documents stay on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers.

It depends on the content. Scanned and image-heavy PDFs often shrink by 50 to 90 percent. PDFs that are mostly text are already small, so savings are lower, and the tool tells you when a file cannot get smaller.

The Light level does not change quality. The other levels resample page images, so they trade some sharpness for a smaller file. You can pick Recommended for a balance or Reduce File Size to set the quality yourself.

Only with the Light level. The other levels save each page as a compressed image, so text may no longer be selectable or searchable. Keep your original if you need the text.

Open the Compress to Target Size tab, upload your PDF, enter 200 and choose KB, then click the button. The tool tests several quality levels and gives you the sharpest result that fits. If 200 KB is not reachable, it returns the smallest version it could make.

Many email services allow attachments of roughly 20 to 25 MB, but smaller is safer and faster. The Optimize for Email tab lets you pick your limit and aims below it with a safety margin.

It means making the file lighter so it downloads and opens quickly on websites and mobile connections. This tool does it by resampling pages for screen viewing.

Not directly. The tool cannot open encrypted files, so please remove the password with the original software first and then add the file.

Yes. It works in any modern browser on Android and iOS. For very large PDFs a computer is faster because the processing happens on your device.
