What Is an Overtime Pay Calculator?

An overtime pay calculator works out how much extra money you earn for the hours you work beyond your normal schedule. The rule for overtime is different in every country. In the United States it is time and a half after 40 hours in a week. In the UAE it is a 25% premium. In Bangladesh and India the law sets double pay. This calculator lets you pick your country and applies the right rule for you.

Use it to check your payslip, to plan how much extra you can earn, or to see if an employer has paid you correctly. It works with a monthly wage for the countries where overtime is based on a monthly basic wage, and with an hourly rate for the United States and for any other country where you know your multiplier.

How to Use This Overtime Calculator

  1. Select your country. The currency, the overtime multiplier and the wage fields change to match the local rule.
  2. Enter your wage. For the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and India, enter your monthly wage. For the United States and other countries, enter your hourly rate.
  3. Check the monthly hours. The calculator fills in the standard number of working hours in a month. You can change it if your contract uses a different figure.
  4. Enter your overtime hours. In the UAE you can also enter the night or rest day hours, which are paid at a higher rate.
  5. Press Calculate to see your overtime pay, your overtime rate and a table for other numbers of hours.

Overtime Rules by Country

The table shows the rule used by the calculator for each country. Laws change, so always check the current rules and your own contract.

CountryOvertime rateWage used
United States1.5 times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek (federal rule)Regular hourly rate
United Arab EmiratesBasic hourly wage plus at least 25%. At least 50% extra for work from 10 pm to 4 am or on a rest dayBasic salary
Saudi ArabiaNormal hourly wage plus 50% of the basic wageBasic wage
BangladeshTwice the ordinary rateBasic wage, dearness allowance and ad hoc pay
IndiaAt least twice the normal rate of wagesBasic wage and dearness allowance

In the United Kingdom there is no general legal right to overtime pay, and in Australia overtime is set by the award or agreement that covers your job. For these and other countries, use Other country and enter the multiplier from your contract.

How Overtime Pay Is Calculated

The calculation has three steps:

  1. Find the normal hourly rate. For a monthly wage, divide the wage by the working hours in a month. In the UAE and Saudi Arabia this is 30 days × 8 hours = 240 hours. In Bangladesh and India this is 26 days × 8 hours = 208 hours.
  2. Apply the overtime multiplier. Multiply the hourly rate by 1.25, 1.5 or 2, depending on the rule.
  3. Multiply by the overtime hours.

Example, UAE: a basic salary of 6,000 gives an hourly rate of 25. Ten hours of ordinary overtime at 1.25 times is 10 × 31.25 = 312.50. Two hours of night overtime at 1.5 times is 2 × 37.50 = 75.

Example, Bangladesh: a basic wage plus allowances of 20,800 gives an hourly rate of 100. Overtime at twice the rate is 200 per hour, so ten hours pay 2,000.

Example, United States: a regular rate of 20 per hour gives an overtime rate of 30. Ten overtime hours pay 300.

Common Overtime Mistakes

  • Using the wrong wage. In many countries the overtime rate is based on basic wage, or basic wage plus certain allowances, not on your full gross pay. Check which parts of your pay count.
  • Using the wrong monthly hours. A divisor of 240 and a divisor of 208 give very different hourly rates. Use the figure that applies in your country or in your contract.
  • Forgetting higher rates. Night work and work on rest days or public holidays can have a higher rate than ordinary overtime.
  • Counting hours that are not overtime. Overtime starts after the legal or contract working hours. Meal breaks are usually not working time.
  • Assuming everyone is eligible. Some managers and other categories of employees are exempt from overtime rules.

Tips to Protect Your Overtime Pay

  • Keep a simple record of the days and hours you work, with start and finish times.
  • Ask for overtime to be approved in writing when your employer requires it.
  • Check each payslip against the calculator and ask HR about any difference.
  • Read your employment contract. It can give you a higher rate than the legal minimum, but not a lower one.
  • Know the working hour limits in your country. Many countries limit the number of overtime hours per day, week or year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Divide your monthly wage by the working hours in the month to get the normal hourly rate, multiply it by the overtime multiplier for your country, and multiply by the overtime hours. If you are paid by the hour, skip the first step.

Under the UAE labour law, ordinary overtime is paid at the basic hourly wage plus at least 25%. Overtime between 10 pm and 4 am, or on a rest day, is paid at least 50% extra. Overtime is normally limited to two hours a day.

The Bangladesh Labour Act sets overtime at twice the ordinary rate of basic wage, dearness allowance and ad hoc pay. For monthly paid workers, the hourly rate is that wage divided by 208.

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, most non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states have extra rules, such as overtime after 8 hours in a day. Check your state rules.

It depends on the country. In the UAE it is based on basic salary. In Bangladesh and India it is based on basic wage plus dearness allowance. In the United States it is based on the regular rate of pay, which can include some bonuses.
