CSV to XML Converter
Paste or upload your CSV and get well-formed XML in one click. Choose the delimiter, rename the root and row tags, and copy or download the result. Free, fast and private.
Everything runs in your browser. Column names become XML tags, and spaces or special characters in headers are replaced so the tags stay valid.
What Is a CSV to XML Converter?
A CSV to XML converter changes a table of comma separated values (CSV) into XML (Extensible Markup Language). CSV stores data as plain rows and columns, which is perfect for spreadsheets. XML stores the same data as nested tags, which many older systems, data feeds and enterprise tools still require.
Our free tool converts as you type. Paste your CSV or upload a .csv file and a clean XML document appears instantly. You can set the delimiter, rename the root and row elements, choose the indentation and decide how empty values are handled.
How to Convert CSV to XML
- Paste your CSV into the input box, or click Upload to load a .csv file. Click Sample to see an example.
- Leave the delimiter on Auto detect, or pick comma, semicolon, tab or pipe.
- Type the names you want for the root element and the row element, for example
productsandproduct. - Keep First row is the header ticked if your first line contains column names.
- Click Copy or Download to save the XML file.
How CSV Is Mapped to XML
Each CSV row becomes one XML element, and each cell becomes a child element named after its column header. Here is a small example.
CSV input:
id,name,city
1,Maya,DhakaXML output:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<data>
<row>
<id>1</id>
<name>Maya</name>
<city>Dhaka</city>
</row>
</data>| CSV part | XML result |
|---|---|
| Header row | Names of the child elements |
| Each data row | One row element |
| Each cell | A child element with the column name |
| Empty cell | An empty element, or skipped if you tick Skip empty values |
| Characters &, < and > | Escaped as entities so the XML stays valid |
Delimiters, Quotes and Special Characters
Not every CSV file uses commas. Files exported from European versions of Excel often use semicolons, and tab separated files use a tab character. The auto detect option checks the first line and picks the most likely delimiter, and you can always choose one yourself.
The converter also follows the standard CSV quoting rules. A value inside double quotes can contain commas and even line breaks, and two double quotes in a row stand for one quote character. So a cell like Rahim, Karim stays together as a single value.
Valid XML Element Names
XML tag names have stricter rules than CSV headers. They cannot contain spaces, they cannot start with a digit, and they cannot start with the letters xml. The converter fixes this for you: spaces and special characters become underscores, and an underscore is added in front of names that start with a digit. An empty header becomes column1, column2 and so on.
For example, the header Unit Price ($) becomes the tag Unit_Price____. If you want cleaner tags, rename the columns in your CSV before converting.
Why Convert CSV to XML?
- Legacy and enterprise systems: many ERP, banking and government systems accept XML but not CSV.
- Data exchange with partners: product feeds, catalogs and orders are often exchanged as XML.
- Validation: XML can be checked against a schema (XSD), which catches missing or wrong fields early.
- Hierarchy later on: once your data is XML, you can wrap or group the rows into more complex structures.
- Test data: developers use it to turn a quick spreadsheet into sample XML for an application.
CSV vs XML: Quick Comparison
| Feature | CSV | XML |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Flat rows and columns | Nested tags |
| File size | Very small | Larger because of tags |
| Self describing | Only through the header row | Every value has a tag name |
| Validation | None built in | Schema support (XSD) |
| Best for | Spreadsheets and simple exports | Data exchange and complex documents |
Common CSV Problems and How to Fix Them
- Wrong delimiter: if everything lands in one tag, switch the delimiter from comma to semicolon or tab.
- Unclosed quotes: a value that starts with a double quote must also end with one.
- Uneven rows: rows with fewer cells are filled with empty values, and extra cells get names like column5.
- Strange characters: save your CSV as UTF-8 so letters from any language, including Bangla, are kept correctly.
- Excel files: if you have an .xlsx file, open it and use Save As to export it as CSV first.
Who Uses a CSV to XML Converter?
Developers use it to prepare test data and import files. E-commerce sellers use it to build product feeds. Data analysts and administrators use it to move spreadsheet exports into systems that require XML, and students use it to learn how the two formats relate.

Is It Safe to Paste My CSV Here?
Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your CSV is not uploaded, stored or sent to any server. As a general habit, still avoid pasting passwords or other secrets into any online tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert CSV to XML online?
Paste your CSV into the input box or upload a .csv file. The XML appears instantly in the output box. Then copy it or download it as an .xml file.
Which delimiters does the tool support?
It supports comma, semicolon, tab and pipe. The default Auto detect option checks your first line and chooses the delimiter that appears most often outside quotes.
What happens if my headers contain spaces or symbols?
XML tag names cannot contain spaces or most symbols. The converter replaces them with underscores and adds an underscore in front of names that start with a digit, so the output stays valid XML.
Can I change the root and row element names?
Yes. Type any names you like in the Root element and Row element fields. The default names are data and row.
Are special characters like ampersands escaped?
Yes. The characters &, < and > are converted to XML entities, so values such as Tom & Jerry do not break the document.
Can I convert an Excel file to XML?
Export your sheet as a CSV file from Excel first, using Save As, and then upload that CSV here. Choose UTF-8 encoding if your data has non-English letters.
Can I convert a large CSV file?
The tool runs in your browser, so speed depends on your device. Files with tens of thousands of rows usually work well. For very large files, a script or command line tool is a better choice.
Is this CSV to XML converter free and private?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit. All processing happens in your browser, so your data is never sent to a server.
