🔒 Private by design: both PDFs are read inside your browser and are never uploaded to any server. Text comparison works on PDFs with selectable text, so scanned image PDFs need OCR first.

Free Online PDF Compare Tool

Two PDFs can look almost the same and still hide important changes: a reworded clause in a contract, a new figure in a report, a missing page in a final export. Finding those changes by flipping between two windows is slow and easy to get wrong.

This free PDF compare tool reads both files in your browser, lines up their text and shows exactly what was added, removed or changed. It also checks the page count and the document properties, so you get a complete picture in seconds. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no upload.

What You Can Do With This PDF Compare Tool

Compare two PDF files

Add an original file and a revised file, then click Compare PDFs. The overview tells you in one glance whether the two documents match, how similar their text is, how many pages differ and which document properties changed. From there you can jump straight to the detailed views.

Highlight text differences

The text view shows every line that exists in only one file. Text removed from the original is shown in red and new text in green. When a line was edited, only the changed words are highlighted, so a single replaced number or name stands out immediately. Unchanged text is folded away so you can focus on what matters.

Compare page count

See how many pages each PDF has and how large the gap is. A page by page table lists the size of every page (such as A4 portrait or US Letter landscape), the number of words, and whether that page is identical, has different text, has a different size, or exists in only one file.

Compare document metadata

Check the hidden properties stored inside each PDF: title, author, subject, keywords, creator application, PDF producer, creation date, modification date and PDF version, together with file size and page count. Differences are marked so you can tell whether a file was re-exported, edited in another program or produced by a different tool.

How to Use the PDF Compare Tool

  1. Drop your original PDF into box A and your revised PDF into box B.
  2. Tick the option to ignore upper and lower case if capitalization changes do not matter to you.
  3. Click Compare PDFs and wait a moment while both files are read.
  4. Read the summary on the Compare Two PDFs tab, then open the other tabs for details.

How to highlight text differences

  1. Run the comparison, then open the Text Differences tab.
  2. Look for red lines, which exist only in File A, and green lines, which exist only in File B.
  3. Check the highlighted words inside paired lines to see exactly what was edited.
  4. Use the page label at the start of each line to find the change in the original document.

How to compare page count

  1. Open the Page Count tab after running the comparison.
  2. Read the banner and the cards to see how many pages each file has.
  3. Scan the table for rows marked Text differs, Size differs, Only in A or Only in B.

How to read the results

  • Red: text that appears only in the original file.
  • Green: text that appears only in the revised file.
  • Highlighted words: the exact words that changed inside an edited line.
  • Similarity: the share of text lines that match in both files.

Why use this PDF compare tool?

Most online comparison services require you to upload both documents, which is risky for contracts, financial statements and personal records. This tool runs entirely inside your browser, so your files never leave your device. It is quick, it is free, and it gives you a clear report instead of a wall of raw data.

Common ways people use it

  • Checking a revised contract or agreement against the version you already reviewed.
  • Confirming that a final export matches the approved draft before printing or publishing.
  • Reviewing changes between two versions of a report, thesis, manual or policy.
  • Spotting a missing page or a changed figure in an invoice or financial statement.
  • Verifying that a file was not edited after it was signed off.
  • Finding out which program created or last saved a PDF.

Tips for the best results

  • Use PDFs with selectable text. Scanned documents are images, so run OCR on them first.
  • The tool compares text, page sizes and properties. It does not detect changes to pictures, colors or layout alone.
  • If a document was reflowed, line breaks can move and some unchanged sentences may be shown as edited.
  • Keep the original in box A and the new version in box B so that red means removed and green means added.
  • Remove the password from protected files with the original software before comparing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. It is 100% free, with no registration, no watermark and no limit on how many files you compare.

No. Both PDFs are read and compared inside your browser, so your documents stay on your device. Only the open source helper library is loaded from a public CDN.

It compares the extracted text line by line and word by word, the page count, the size and word count of every page, and the document metadata such as title, author, producer and dates.

No. It focuses on text, page structure and properties. If two files contain the same text but a picture or color was changed, the text comparison will report no differences.

A scanned PDF stores each page as a picture without selectable text, so there is nothing to compare. Run OCR to turn the scan into searchable text, then compare again.

Red lines exist only in File A, the original. Green lines exist only in File B, the revised file. Inside an edited line, the highlighted words show exactly what changed.

If a paragraph was reflowed or re-wrapped, the line breaks move and the lines no longer match exactly even though the wording is the same. Compare the highlighted words to see the real changes.

Saving or exporting a PDF again updates the modification date and often the producer. Different dates or producers are normal and do not mean that the content changed.

Not directly. The tool cannot open encrypted files, so remove the password with the original software first and then add the file again.

Yes, it works in modern mobile browsers. For long documents a computer is faster and gives a more comfortable view of the differences.
