What Is an HTML to Markdown Converter?

An HTML to Markdown converter turns web page code (HTML) into Markdown, a simple text format that uses symbols like # for headings and ** for bold. HTML is great for browsers, but it is full of tags that make it hard to read and edit by hand. Markdown keeps the same structure in a clean, lightweight form.

Our free tool converts as you type. Paste your HTML or upload an .html file and clean Markdown appears instantly. You can choose the heading style, the bullet marker and the code block style, and decide whether links and images are kept.

How to Convert HTML to Markdown

  1. Paste your HTML into the input box, or click Upload to load an .html file. Click Sample to see an example.
  2. Pick your options: heading style, bullet marker and code block style. The defaults work for most projects.
  3. Tick or untick Keep links and Keep images.
  4. The Markdown updates as you type. Click Copy to copy it, or Download to save a .md file.

What Is Markdown and Why Use It?

Markdown is a plain text writing format created to be easy to read and easy to write. A Markdown file looks neat even before it is turned into a web page. That is why it is used for README files, documentation, notes, blogs and chat tools.

Because Markdown is just text, it works well with version control tools like Git, opens in any editor and is easy to convert back to HTML whenever you need it.

Why Convert HTML to Markdown?

  • Move a blog or site: static site generators such as Jekyll, Hugo and Astro use Markdown files for posts and pages.
  • Documentation: GitHub README files and many documentation tools are written in Markdown.
  • Notes and knowledge bases: apps like Obsidian and Notion work well with Markdown text.
  • Cleaner content: removing tags makes text easier to edit, review and compare.
  • AI and writing tools: Markdown is a compact way to share page content with other tools.

Tips for Better Results

  • Copy only the content. Paste the article or section you need, not the whole page with menus and footers.
  • Use clean HTML. Inline styles and extra wrappers are ignored, but well structured headings and lists give the best output.
  • Keep tables simple. Markdown tables have one header row and no merged cells.
  • Check the result. Read through the headings and links once, especially on long pages.

What Markdown Cannot Keep

Markdown is a simple format, so some parts of HTML have no equivalent. Colors, fonts, CSS classes, forms, buttons, iframes, video players and merged table cells cannot be stored in standard Markdown. The converter keeps the text and the structure, and drops the rest.

Who Uses an HTML to Markdown Converter?

Bloggers and content teams use it to move posts to a new platform. Developers use it to write documentation and README files. Writers use it to clean up copied web content, and students use it to turn web pages into notes.

Working with other formats too? Try our XML to JSON converter, the JSON to YAML converter or the CSV to XML converter.

Is It Safe to Paste My HTML Here?

Yes. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your HTML is not uploaded, stored or sent to any server. Scripts inside the HTML are not run, they are simply removed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert HTML to Markdown online?

Paste your HTML into the input box or upload an .html file. The Markdown appears instantly in the output box. Then copy it or download it as a .md file.

Which HTML elements are converted?

Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, images, ordered and unordered lists including nested lists, blockquotes, inline code, code blocks, horizontal rules, line breaks and tables.

Are tables converted to Markdown?

Yes. Tables become pipe tables in the GitHub style. The first row is used as the header row. Merged cells are not supported by Markdown, so each cell is placed in its own column.

What happens to scripts, styles and other unsupported tags?

Scripts and style blocks are removed. Other unknown tags are skipped and only the text inside them is kept.

What Markdown flavor does the tool produce?

The output follows CommonMark with the common GitHub Flavored Markdown extras for tables and strikethrough, so it works in GitHub, most static site generators and note apps.

Can I choose the heading and list style?

Yes. You can use hash style headings or underline style for levels 1 and 2, and pick a dash, star or plus as the bullet marker. You can also choose fenced or indented code blocks.

Can I convert a whole web page?

Yes, you can paste a full page. For the cleanest result, paste only the content you need, because menus, footers and sidebars will also be converted to text.

Is this HTML to Markdown converter free and private?

Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit. All processing happens in your browser, so your HTML is never sent to a server.
