Check and Clean Your Photos
Upload photos to view their hidden metadata, then download clean copies without EXIF, GPS, IPTC or XMP data.
Your photos are read and cleaned inside your browser and are never uploaded. JPG, PNG and WEBP files are cleaned without re-compressing, so the picture quality stays exactly the same.
What Is EXIF Metadata in a Photo?
Every photo from a phone or a camera carries a hidden block of information called EXIF data (Exchangeable Image File Format). It is saved inside the image file itself and travels with the picture whenever you send it by email, upload it to a website or share it as a file. Most people never see it, but anyone who opens the file with the right tool can read it. This free EXIF Metadata Remover and Viewer lets you look at that hidden information and delete it with one click.
What Can a Photo Reveal About You?
- Camera and phone details: the make, the model and often the lens that took the picture.
- Date and time: exactly when the photo was taken and when it was last edited.
- GPS location: latitude and longitude of the place where the photo was taken, sometimes accurate to a few metres.
- Camera settings: exposure time, aperture, ISO and focal length.
- Software and author: the editing app used, and the artist or copyright text if one was set.
The GPS data is the biggest privacy risk. A single photo taken at home can show your home address to anyone who receives the original file.
How to View EXIF Data of an Image
- Drop one or more photos into the upload box.
- Look at the colored label on each file. It tells you at a glance whether metadata was found and whether the photo contains a GPS location.
- Press View details to see the readable fields, grouped into camera, settings, date, image, author and location.
How to Remove EXIF Data from a Photo
- Add your photos to the tool.
- Press Remove and download on a single photo, or use the button at the top to clean all photos in one go.
- Your clean copy is saved with the word clean added to the file name. Your original file is never changed.
No quality loss
Many tools remove metadata by redrawing the picture and saving it again, which compresses the image a second time and lowers the quality. This tool does not do that. For JPG, PNG and WEBP files it removes only the metadata blocks and keeps the picture data untouched, so the cleaned file looks identical and is usually slightly smaller. For JPG photos that rely on an orientation tag to display upright, the tool keeps just that one small tag so your picture does not turn sideways.
Why You Should Remove Metadata Before Sharing
- Protect your location. Remove GPS data before you send photos of your home, your children or your workplace.
- Selling online. Photos of items you sell may reveal your address.
- Stay anonymous. Journalists, activists and anyone who wants to stay private should never publish files that name their device.
- Clean files for websites. Removing extra data keeps images tidy and a little lighter.
EXIF, IPTC and XMP: What Is the Difference?
| Type | What it stores |
|---|---|
| EXIF | Camera, date, settings and GPS added by the device |
| IPTC | Captions, keywords and credits added by photo editors and news agencies |
| XMP | Editing history and extra tags added by apps such as Lightroom |
The tool detects all three and removes them together.
Do Social Networks Remove EXIF Data?
Some apps and websites strip location data when you upload a picture, but this differs from one service to another and can change at any time. Email attachments, cloud download links and messages sent as a file usually keep the metadata. The safest habit is to clean a photo yourself before you share it.
Supported Formats
The tool reads and cleans JPG, PNG and WEBP files directly. If you add another image type, it is re-saved as a PNG without metadata. If you also need smaller files, use the Compress Image to Exact KB tool, and to change the file type use the All-in-One Image Converter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is EXIF data?
EXIF data is information stored inside a photo file, such as the camera model, the date and time, the camera settings and sometimes the GPS location where the photo was taken.
How do I see the EXIF data of a photo?
Upload the photo to this tool and press View details. The readable fields are shown in groups, and a warning appears if the photo contains a GPS location.
How do I remove EXIF data from an image?
Add the image and press Remove and download. The tool deletes the metadata blocks and gives you a clean copy, while your original file stays unchanged.
Does removing EXIF data reduce image quality?
No. For JPG, PNG and WEBP the picture data is not touched, so the quality is exactly the same. Only the hidden metadata is removed.
Will my photo still display upright after cleaning?
JPG photos use a small orientation tag to display upright. The tool keeps only that tag when it is needed, so the picture does not turn sideways. It contains no personal information.
Do WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram remove EXIF data?
Some services remove location data when you upload, but this is not the same everywhere and can change. Files sent by email or as a document usually keep their metadata, so cleaning a photo first is safer.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The photos are read and cleaned inside your browser, and nothing is sent to our server.
Can I clean many photos at once?
Yes. Add as many photos as you like and use the button at the top to remove metadata from all of them and download the clean copies.
